This church is the heart of Križ
The Church of the Holy Cross has been here since 1334, and a town developed around it. The town was surrounded by a defense wall and served as a military fortress.

A leonine welcome from Roman times
You will easily spot a stone from the Roman days. But only after a close examination, you might discern the shape of a lion. It is quite possible the 15th-century church had a luxurious entrance with this particular lion.

Nothing can get by
The spacious view represented safety. It would be hard for the enemy to come close to the former fortress of Križ without being noticed when you could see all the way to Čazma, Moslavačka Gora, and the town of Sisak.

Fairytaleish park
Park around the church used to have winding brick-paved trails. Gardener Duchanek planted all sorts of trees and surrounded the park with a short fence and chestnut trees.

Could that be a Roman villa?
If you traveled back to the third or fourth century, you might spot the shape of a Roman building far away. From this time distance, we can only guess what it was. Perhaps a military camp? Or Vila Rustica, a wealthy Roman’s house?

Across the street
The memorial plaque on the art gallery across the street reminds us of its military history. Notice the small orthodox church of St John the Baptist and a library founded in 1884.

“With that voice, she can conquer the world”
said the singer Ida Wimberger-Brkić when she first heard the voice of Milka Trnina. Far away on the horizon, there is a village by the river Česma called Vezišće with ruins of an old mill. In that mill, in December of 1863, a girl was born with the voice of a nightingale.
